Guides to Skiing in Japan
Written from the same dataset that powers this site — snowfall measured identically at all 3,069 ski areas on earth. Every figure here is one you can check.
Which Ski Resort Gets the Most Snow in the World?
We measured snowfall at all 3,069 ski areas on earth the same way. The top two both shut in winter because they get too much snow: a Norwegian glacier at 783 cm that opens in May, and Okutadami Maruyama in Niigata at 765 cm. 46 of the top 100 are Japanese.
Where the snow falls 2026-08-11How Japan's Early-Bird Lift Tickets Work: At Hakuba Happo-One, Eight of the Nine Need a Japanese ID Card
Hakuba Happo-One opened early-bird sales at 10:00 on 1 October. A day costs ¥6,400 against ¥9,800 at the window, 35% off. But every ticket on the list except one needs a My Number Card and a Japanese phone app. A visitor from abroad can buy exactly one of them, at 15% off.
2026-10-01 Planning a tripA Historic El Niño Is Forecast. Here Is What the Last Big One Did to Japan's Snow.
NOAA gives a very strong El Niño better than a 90% chance this winter. We measured every Japanese ski area across the last 12 winters: El Niño winters ran 88% of normal, and the strongest of the twelve left Japan at 63%. But Hakuba held 92% of its average that winter while Niseko fell to 57%.
2026-09-28 Japan vs elsewherePlanning a tripWhich Famous Ski Resorts Actually Get the Most Snow? 24 Names, Measured
Niseko is 526th in the world for snowfall. Zermatt is 554th, Jackson Hole 924th, Aspen 1,201st. Measured identically across 3,069 ski areas, the names everyone books and the places it actually snows turn out to be two different lists.
2026-09-05 Planning a tripBooking Japan for Christmas? Hokkaido's December Has Never Collapsed. Honshu's Has.
We counted twelve Decembers at all 397 Japanese ski areas. Of those averaging 60 cm or more, 40 of Hokkaido's 46 kept over half their normal December even in their worst year. In Honshu and the west, 23 of 196 did. In December 2015, the last very strong El Niño, 250 of 397 ski areas came in below half.
2026-09-29 Japan vs elsewhereAustralia Just Had Its Worst Season in Twenty Years. Here Is What Japan's 12-Winter Record Says About Booking It Instead.
Snow depth at Spencers Creek peaked at 94.5 cm, the third lowest since 1954, and resorts closed in August. Our own measure — snowfall, not depth — puts Australia at 50% of its 12-year average. The gap between those two numbers is the story: it was the warmth, not only the lack of snow. New Zealand, meanwhile, finished at 108% of normal.
2026-09-28 Planning a tripJapan vs elsewhereJapan Lift Ticket Prices for 2026/27: What a Day Costs at Twelve Big Resorts, and the Weeks It Costs Half
We checked the 2026/27 adult day ticket on each resort's own site. At the window it runs from ¥7,000 at Akakura Kanko to ¥16,700 at Rusutsu. Buying online saves up to ¥3,500, and the first and last weeks of the season cost up to half. For those cheap spring weeks, we add which way each resort's slopes face.
2026-09-15 Planning a tripWhen Japan's Ski Resorts Open for 2026/27, and Whether There Will Be Snow When They Do
Japan's 2026/27 season opens on 20 November at Sapporo Kokusai, 21 November at Sapporo Teine and 28 November at Niseko, Rusutsu, Kiroro and Furano. Dates checked on each resort's own site, set beside what December actually delivers: in Hokkaido about as much snow as January, in Nagano and Niigata about four-fifths.
2026-09-15 Planning a tripClimate and the futureIs March a Good Time to Ski in Japan?
Across twelve winters at 397 Japanese ski areas, March delivers 46 cm against January's 81 cm. Niigata keeps 38% of its January; Hokkaido keeps 69%. But Niigata's 38% is 76 cm and Hokkaido's 69% is 41 cm, which reverses the advice.
2026-09-10 Planning a tripJapan vs elsewhereWhere in Japan Do You Get the Most Powder Days?
Season snowfall totals do not tell you how often it snows. We counted the days that deliver 5 cm or more at all 397 Japanese ski areas. Hokkaido's median is 12 days a winter and Honshu's is 21 — and Honshu rains about three times as often.
2026-09-07 Where the snow fallsClimate and the futureNevados de Chillán: South America's Snowiest Ski Area, and Why Its Snow Is Wet
Nevados de Chillán gets 752 cm a season, 3rd of the 3,069 ski areas we measure and the most in South America by a distance. Its snow falls at an average of +0.3 °C, which is the catch, and its winters run from 188 cm to 1,121 cm.
2026-09-06 Climate and the futureHow Accurate Is ERA5 Snowfall in Japan? Against 63 Weather Stations, It Reports About Half
We compared ERA5 against 63 Japan Meteorological Agency stations near ski areas. The model returns 56% of what the ground measures — and the higher the station, the worse it gets. At 700 m and above it returns 39%.
2026-08-28 Climate and the futureWhere the snow fallsSnow Quality or Snow Quantity: Why Japan's Snowiest Ski Areas Are Not Its Best
Japan's snowiest ski areas see rain on more than one winter day in four, and the wettest of them on two in five. We rank all 397 of them on a quality measure that ignores how much falls and scores what falls: temperature on snowing days, how often it dumps, and penalties for rain and wind. It disagrees with the snowfall ranking almost completely.
2026-08-17 Japan vs elsewherePlanning a tripHakuba or Niseko? We Checked Both Against the Weather Stations
Hakuba advertises 11 m of snow, Niseko 15 m. The weather stations next to them record 447 cm and 583 cm. Here is what the measurements say about which one to book.
2026-08-11 Planning a tripWhich Japanese Lift Ticket Buys the Most Snow? Price per Centimetre at 22 Resorts
We divided each resort's adult day ticket by the snow it actually gets. Across 22 Japanese resorts the figure runs from ¥6.50 to ¥78.80 per centimetre, a twelvefold spread, and the expensive end is not the snowy end. Niseko is ¥46.70. Nozawa is ¥17.30.
2026-10-02 Where the snow fallsFurano Is Being Called the Next Niseko. Its Snow Record Says Something More Interesting.
Land in Furano's Kitamine district rose 27.1% in 2025, the steepest in Japan, and Hong Kong, Malaysian and Marriott money has followed. But Furano ranks 237th of 397 Japanese ski areas for snowfall. What it does have is the steadiest winter of any big-name resort in the country: 13% variation over 12 winters, and 93% of normal in the El Niño year that cut Niseko to 57%.
2026-09-28 Planning a tripThe Cheapest Way to Buy Lift Tickets in Japan: Joint Passes, Hour Tickets and the Break-Even Maths
A Rusutsu day ticket is ¥3,500 cheaper online than at the window. A Hakuba Valley day pass costs ¥77 per pisted kilometre; Mt. Naeba costs ¥185. Myoko Suginohara's season pass pays for itself in 8.9 days, Niseko's in 13.7. And the new hour tickets are a good deal only if you ski short days — we did the arithmetic for all of it.
2026-09-28 Where the snow fallsWho Is Buying Japan's Ski Resorts — and What the Snow Data Says They Actually Bought
A Singapore fund took Madarao and Myoko Suginohara. China's Fosun took Kiroro, its hotels and the Club Med brand on top of them. Hong Kong and Malaysian money is in Furano, an Indonesian group is looking at Minami-Furano — and Vail Resorts, the largest ski company on earth, owns nothing here at all. Set against twelve winters of measurements, the buyers and the pass companies are chasing two different things.
2026-09-28 Planning a tripJapan vs elsewhereIkon, Epic, Indy or Mountain Collective in Japan for 2026/27: Which Resorts, How Many Days, and How Much Snow Each Gets
Ikon gives 7 days at each of ten Japanese destinations, Epic 5 consecutive days, Mountain Collective 2 and Indy 2. Each pass checked against its own terms and set beside twelve winters of our snowfall data. Togakushi, on Indy, shares the deepest floor on any pass with Hakuba Cortina, on Epic.
2026-09-14 Planning a tripWhere the snow fallsWhat's New at Japan's Ski Resorts for 2026/27, and How Much Snow Each Place Actually Gets
Six changes for 2026/27, each checked against the operator's own announcement. A new gondola at Niseko Village, a six-seat chair at Tsugaike, Madarao joining the Ikon Pass, Asia's first members-only ski area at Togari, new cabins on the Kurodake ropeway, and the first nonstop from the US mainland to Sapporo.
2026-09-14 Planning a tripClimate and the futureWhat Is the Best Month to Ski the Andes?
We counted every month of the last twelve southern winters at five Andes ski areas. The biggest month changes from year to year, and in 4 of 12 winters Valle Nevado got less than 20 cm in July. Hakuba's worst January over the same years was 97 cm.
2026-09-12 Japan vs elsewhereClimate and the futureJapan or the Alps for March Skiing? It Depends on the Altitude
Over the same twelve winters at 397 Japanese and 963 Alpine ski areas, March delivers 57% of January's snowfall in Japan and 84% in the Alps. Matching the altitudes does not close the gap. What closes it is how much snow Japan starts with.
2026-09-10 Climate and the futurePlanning a tripIn the Andes, Height Does Not Buy You More Snow. It Buys You Snow Instead of Rain.
In South America the low ski areas get more snow than the high ones — 387 cm against 307 cm in the middle of each group. Then look at the rain: 2% of winter days against 30%. Volcán Osorno sees rain on 65%. Los Penitentes sees it on 1%.
2026-09-10 Where the snow fallsPlanning a tripSkiing From Santiago: Ski Areas Within 40 km, and Almost No Rain
Only three cities of three million or more have a 300 cm ski area within 120 km: Santiago, Seattle and Nagoya. Santiago's nearest is 38 km, about half Seattle's distance — and the fields beside it see rain on 3% of winter days against a Japanese median of 16%.
2026-09-06 Where the snow fallsPlanning a tripWhere to Ski in July and August: Argentina Has the Deepest Snow of Any Country on Earth, and Everyone Books New Zealand
Argentina's median ski area gets 348 cm a season — more than Japan's 249 cm, and the highest median of any country we measure with ten or more ski areas. New Zealand's median is 144 cm. The English-language northern-summer ski trip points at the wrong hemisphere's end.
2026-09-06 Climate and the futureJapan vs elsewhereEverywhere on Earth You Climb for Snow. Japan Is the One Place You Drive Toward the Sea.
Across 3,069 ski areas we measure, height and snowfall move together — +0.58 in France, +0.85 in Germany. In Japan the figure is +0.02. The reason is not that elevation stopped working.
2026-08-27 Climate and the futureJapan vs elsewhereHow Close to Rain Does the Snow Fall? Japan, the Alps and North America Compared
We measured how close to freezing the snow already falls at 240 randomly drawn resorts in the Alps and North America, and at all 397 in Japan. Japan is not one place: Honshu is among the most exposed, Hokkaido among the least.
2026-08-22 OnsenPlanning a tripWhen Is There Snow at Japan's Hot Spring Towns?
If you want to sit in an outdoor bath with snow on the ground, the question is when, not just where. We measured the snow depth at 14 Japanese hot spring towns across three winters — arrival, departure, and how many days it is actually deep.
2026-08-18 Climate and the futureWhich Japanese Ski Areas Keep Their Snow at 4°C of Warming?
New research from Hokkaido University puts 7 ski areas on stable natural snow at 4°C. Our own data on 397 Japanese ski areas says 17 of the ranking's top 20 are on the wrong side of that line.
2026-08-16 Where the snow fallsAsia's First Members-Only Ski Resort: What Is the Snow Like at Togari?
THE CLUB TOGARI sold its first 40 memberships in 14 days at ¥20.4 million each. The hill behind it, Togari Onsen, is 6 km from Nozawa and shares its snow: 450 cm a season, 108th in the world. It also has 16 runs to Nozawa's 55, and a base 178 m lower. What members are buying is not the mountain.
2026-09-28 Where the snow fallsKiroro Is Not One of Japan's Snowiest Resorts. It Is One of Its Coldest — and That Is the Point.
Kiroro ranks 125th of 397 Japanese ski areas for how much snow falls, but 24th for snow quality: −8.0°C on snow days and rain on 6% of winter days, colder and drier than Niseko. It sits in a village of 1,159 people, 14 km from Otaru and 21 km from the Yoichi distilleries, and since 2023 one Chinese group has owned the mountain, the hotels and the Club Med brand on them.
2026-09-28 Where the snow fallsA Singapore Fund Is Spending ¥200 Billion on Myoko. We Measured What It Bought.
Patience Capital Group bought Madarao in 2022 and Myoko Suginohara in 2023, and will spend about ¥200 billion over ten years building Japan's Aspen. The snow record says it picked the right valley: Madarao is 129th in the world and Seki Onsen, 13 km away, is 19th, while Niseko is 526th. The catch is rain.
2026-09-28 Where the snow fallsPlanning a tripWhich Way Do Japan's Ski Slopes Face, and Does It Matter?
We measured which way every mapped run descends at 180 Japanese ski areas. At the middle one, 77% of the vertical faces north or east. That barely predicts snow quality: the weather decides what falls. Where direction matters is after the snow stops, and above all in spring.
2026-09-15 Japan vs elsewherePlanning a tripIs Japan's Snow Really Better Than Australia's? Mostly, It Is the Rain
We measured snow quality at 456 ski areas. All ten Australian ones land in the bottom 70. Perisher is 388th and Niseko is 38th — a far wider gap than the snowfall figures suggest, and it is made of rain.
2026-09-07 Climate and the futureJapan vs elsewhereWhere Is the Driest Snow in the Southern Hemisphere?
We extended our snow-quality measurement to all 59 ski areas below the equator. The high Andes are drier than most of Japan. New Zealand and Australia get rain on a third of winter days. And the southern hemisphere's snowiest resorts are mostly not its best ones.
2026-09-06 Where the snow fallsPlanning a tripWhere Is the Next Niseko? Snowier Ski Areas With Somewhere to Stay
Thirty Japanese ski areas get more snow than Niseko Grand Hirafu and have somewhere to sleep within reach of a city. Twenty-four have no English Wikipedia page — though most have a Japanese one. The beds did not make Niseko; they arrived after it was already famous.
2026-09-05 Climate and the futureWhy Is Hokkaido's Snow Colder? Latitude, Elevation and Rain
Across 397 Japanese ski areas, elevation sets the temperature and latitude does almost nothing to it — inside Honshu, going north is worth nothing at all. What latitude buys instead is the absence of rain.
2026-08-21 Planning a tripClimate and the futureWhich Japanese Ski Areas Still Get Snow in a Bad Winter?
You book in August and ski in February, so the question is how bad a bad winter gets. Over twelve winters at 376 Japanese ski areas, the bad years arrived everywhere at once — and what protected you was not a steady region but a deep one.
2026-08-17 Planning a tripWhen Is the Best Time to Ski in Japan?
January, measured over twelve winters at 397 ski areas. Last season was not typical — its January ran high and its March ran less than half of normal — so here is the average alongside it, month by month.
2026-08-11 Where the snow fallsJapan vs elsewhereHakuba's Ten Ski Areas, Side by Side: 1,071 m of Vertical at One End, 70% Beginner Runs at the Other
Hakuba Valley is sold as one place and is ten separate ski areas. We put the terrain each one publishes next to the snow we measured over twelve winters. Happo-One has 23.3 km of piste and, with Goryu, the least snow; Cortina and Norikura share a ¥6,500 ticket and sit in the second-snowiest band; Jiigatake is 70% beginner runs with 260 m of vertical.
2026-10-02 Where the snow fallsJapan vs elsewhereMyoko's Eleven Ski Areas: Which One to Choose
Eleven ski areas sit within 16 km of Akakura. Measured over twelve winters, Seki Onsen gets 689 cm and Myoko Suginohara 357 cm — and Seki is the only one of the eleven in Japan's top 50 for both how much snow falls and what that snow is like. Here is what each one actually offers.
2026-10-02 Planning a tripJapan Is Sold on Powder. Measured, It Is the Easiest Big Ski Country to Learn In.
Half of Japan's pisted kilometres are graded easy or novice — against 24% in the United States and 28% in Canada. And 255 of Japan's 397 ski areas have a natural hot-spring source within 5 km. Here are the numbers, the caveat about grading, and the resorts where a first-timer gets the most of both.
2026-09-28 OnsenWhere the snow fallsSki and Soak in Japan: Which Ski Areas Have a Hot Spring Source Next Door, and How Hot the Water Is
We matched 7,203 analysed hot spring sources to Japan's ski areas. 255 of 397 have one within 5 km, 145 of them at 42 °C or hotter, and 54 have one within 1 km. These are the ski areas that pair top snow with hot water close by, and the ones where the water is strongly acidic.
2026-09-15 Japan vs elsewherePlanning a tripNiseko or Las Leñas: Which Gets More Snow, and Which Gets Better Snow?
Over twelve winters Las Leñas averaged 469 cm to Niseko's 289, and its worst winter (196 cm) was still deeper than Niseko's worst (166 cm). What Niseko has is colder snow — it falls at −6.2 °C against −3.2 °C — and a calendar most people can actually use.
2026-09-06 Where the snow fallsPlanning a tripYuzawa's 21 Ski Areas: Which One for the Best Snow?
Four of the world's ten snowiest ski areas sit in one Niigata valley. In that same valley the temperature when it snows ranges from −7.1 °C to −0.3 °C, and the places with the most snow are the warm ones.
2026-09-05 Snow and daily lifeWhere the snow fallsWhich of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains Have a Ski Area?
We matched Fukada's 1964 list against 397 Japanese ski areas. Above 2,500 m, 88% of the volcanoes have a ski area within 10 km and only 19% of everything else does — and no lift on the list reaches a summit but one.
2026-08-29 Snow and daily lifeWill There Be Snow at Japan's Winter Festivals? Three Winters, Measured
Japan's winter festivals are photographed in deep snow. We measured what was actually on the ground during each one across three winters — and checked the 580-year record of a frozen lake that has now failed eight years running.
2026-08-19 OnsenWhere the snow fallsWhich Hot Spring Towns in Japan Get the Deepest Snow?
Seki Onsen's slopes take 689 cm of snow a season, 19th in the world, and the town has two places to stay. Japan's hot spring towns ranked by measured snowfall, with how many inns each actually has and how far it is from the nearest city. No skiing required.
2026-08-16 Where the snow fallsClimate and the futureHow Much Does Snow in Chile and Argentina Change From Winter to Winter?
Three of the world's thirty snowiest ski areas are in South America on our standard measure. Over twelve winters, the typical Chilean ski area's best winter was about four and a half times its worst and the typical Argentine one's three and a half — against 2.3 in Japan. Only Italy swings as hard as Chile.
2026-09-05 Planning a tripWhere the snow fallsCan You See the Snow Before You Go? Live Cameras at Japan's Ski Areas
We opened the official website of every ski area in Japan. Just 32% publish a live view of their slopes. What most of them have instead is a highway camera run by a regional bureau — and it answers a question you probably care about more.

2026-08-11 Where the snow fallsClimate and the futureIs Western Japan Snowier Than It Looks? Our Model Against the Weather Stations
Western Japan's ski areas look thin in our data — a median of 125 cm against a national 249 cm. Against 16 Japan Meteorological Agency stations, the model we use returns 44% of what the ground records there. The region is far snowier than our own numbers say.
2026-09-05 Japan vs elsewherePlanning a tripHow Big Are Japan's Ski Areas? Smaller Than the Alps, Snowier per Kilometre
Measured across nearly 1,800 ski areas: the median Japanese one has 12 km of piste against France's 25. What Japan has instead is 25 cm of seasonal snow for every kilometre of run — more than two and a half times France and three times the United States.
2026-08-28 Snow and daily lifeJapan's Snow Huts Are Water Shrines. The Snowiest Towns Do Not Have Them.
The kamakura is not a shelter from snow. It is a well-side shrine to a water god, roughly 450 years old, and Yokote built its huts on 6 cm of snow in 2024. We measured the snow at five towns that hold one.
2026-08-20 Snow and daily lifeWhy Did Powder Snowboards Come From Japan?
