By region
Darker means a higher median snowfall across that region’s ski areas. The colours are not arbitrary region colours.

These figures come from estimates that we correct region by region against the records of nearby weather stations. Error at any single ski area remains, so read this as a broad difference between regions rather than a ranking — the order of two adjacent regions means nothing. Note also that the heaviest snowfall in Japan by volume falls on the Sea-of-Japan side of Honshu; Hokkaido is famous not for how much snow falls but for how dry it is.
