Sahoro is a ski area in Hokkaido, Japan, on slopes between roughly 398 and 744 m. Its mapped area is about 3.4 km across, with 43 marked runs and 9 lifts (about 24 km of piste in all).

Over the last twelve winters the ERA5 weather model gives it 194 cm of snowfall a season, 272nd of the 397 ski areas we measure in Japan. Its winters are fairly steady; even the leanest, 2018/19 (149 cm), reached 77% of the average. December brings as much snow as January here (52 and 49 cm on average). Weather models read low in the mountains: a Japan Meteorological Agency station 11.6 km away measured 237 cm a winter over the last three seasons, against 181 cm from the model. Snowfall days are cold, averaging −6.1 °C at mid-mountain, and its snow-quality score ranks 148th of 397 in Japan.

The quality score deliberately excludes how much snow falls — it uses temperature, frequency, rain and wind. Snowing a lot and snowing well are different things.

What was actually measured nearby

Total snowfall from December to March recorded at the 新得 weather station — 11.6 km from this ski area, 393 m below its mid-slope.

Three-season average237 cm

The figure calculated on this page is 181 cm.

A weather station is not a ski slope. We picked one at a similar elevation, but it stands in a valley or a village. More snow falls on the mountain above it. We have not tried to guess how much more.

What we have measured at Sahoro

  • Furano Is Being Called the Next Niseko. Its Snow Record Says Something More Interesting. Land in Furano's Kitamine district rose 27.1% in 2025, the steepest in Japan, and Hong Kong, Malaysian and Marriott money has followed. But Furano ranks 237th of 397 Japanese ski areas for snowfall. What it does have is the steadiest winter of any big-name resort in the country: 13% variation over 12 winters, and 93% of normal in the El Niño year that cut Niseko to 57%.
