- Furano Is Being Called the Next Niseko. Its Snow Record Says Something More Interesting. Land in Furano's Kitamine district rose 27.1% in 2025, the steepest in Japan, and Hong Kong, Malaysian and Marriott money has followed. But Furano ranks 237th of 397 Japanese ski areas for snowfall. What it does have is the steadiest winter of any big-name resort in the country: 13% variation over 12 winters, and 93% of normal in the El Niño year that cut Niseko to 57%.
- Kiroro Is Not One of Japan's Snowiest Resorts. It Is One of Its Coldest — and That Is the Point. Kiroro ranks 125th of 397 Japanese ski areas for how much snow falls, but 24th for snow quality: −8.0°C on snow days and rain on 6% of winter days, colder and drier than Niseko. It sits in a village of 1,159 people, 14 km from Otaru and 21 km from the Yoichi distilleries, and since 2023 one Chinese group has owned the mountain, the hotels and the Club Med brand on them.
- Why Is Hokkaido's Snow Colder? Latitude, Elevation and Rain Across 397 Japanese ski areas, elevation sets the temperature and latitude does almost nothing to it — inside Honshu, going north is worth nothing at all. What latitude buys instead is the absence of rain.
